Description

The aurora outburst last weekend has left me struggling with how best to share, particularly the second consecutive night when we were fortunate to observe the real time evolution of a classic STEVE formation with nearly horizon to horizon picket fence. The first panel is to the NW, note the light blue from the waxing gibbous moon on the left side of the image. The center panel was taken looking due north, and the 3rd panel was looking to the NE.  Even with a 14 mm lens, it was all I could do to capture it all!  This was my first attempt at  a montage in Photoshop, and I've uploaded a few different versions, but the horizontal shows the expanse of the formation the best, I think.  We were right at the 45h parallel, and I felt like I was looking up at more than 45 degrees to see the picket fence, though a friend was watching at the same time off of Drummond Island 120 miles to the Northeast and observed it pretty much overhead!  In the 3rd panel, you can see M45 lower right and M31 upper right.
